About Brentford
Founded in 1889 and previously located at Griffin Park since 1904, Brentford Football Club achieved success in the 1930s. During that period, the club consistently finished in the top six of the top-flight and won the Second Division title in 1935. Although Brentford has mostly competed in the third and fourth tiers of English football in recent years, they have made it to the FA Cup quarter-finals four times, most recently in 1989.
Brentford maintains fierce rivalries with two London clubs: Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. The rivalry with QPR dates back to 1967 when the latter attempted to take over Brentford, which would have resulted in the club’s dissolution.
In 2020, Brentford bid farewell to Griffin Park, their home for 116 years, with a victory over Swansea in their final home game, securing a place in the Championship play-off final.
Community Stadium History
Brentford Community Stadium officially opened its doors in 2020, marking the end of a long wait for a new ground. Discussions about a potential move began in 1973, with the plans gaining momentum in 2007. The club obtained an option to purchase land near Griffin Park, and subsequent approvals were granted by the London Borough of Hounslow and the Secretary Of State For Communities And Local Government. Construction commenced in 2018, and despite delays caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, the stadium was completed that year.
Future Developments
As a relatively new facility, there are no significant future developments to report at this time. However, in 2022, rail seating was introduced in the entire West Stand and the north-east corner of the stadium following a successful government trial of safe standing.
