Currently known as the One Call Stadium due to sponsorship, Field Mill is a historic football ground with a rich heritage. It claims to be the oldest football ground in the Football League, dating back to 1861. While reports suggest that football was played at the ground even earlier, it is widely accepted that 1861 is the first verifiable year of match hosting.
The stadium derived its name from a water-powered textile mill that once stood across the road. Although the mill was demolished in 1925, the ground has continued to bear its original name, except for periods when it is sponsored by different companies. Field Mill was occasionally used as a cricket ground in the past, but since 1894, it has been predominantly dedicated to football.

About Mansfield Town
Established in 1897 as Mansfield Wesleyans, the club underwent several name changes before finally settling on Mansfield Town in 1910. Known as “The Stags,” the club has enjoyed a varied history and achieved notable success. Mansfield Town won the Football League Trophy in 1987, the Third Division in 1977, the Fourth Division in 1975, and the Conference Premier League in 2013.
Ownership controversies plagued the club in the late 1980s when Keith Haslam acquired it. Haslam’s tenure as owner was marked by controversy, with allegations of him extracting over a million pounds from the club. In 2008, he sold the club for £1 while retaining ownership of the stadium. One potential bidder had even considered renaming the team to Harchester United, inspired by the TV series Dream Team. Fortunately, this proposal never transpired.
Field Mill One Call Stadium History
The area where Field Mill stands was originally used for recreational activities by workers from the Greenhalgh & Sons Works. While occasional cricket matches were played, football matches took precedence due to the involvement of Harwood Greenhalgh, one of the Sons, who played for Notts County and England. From 1912 to 1916, the ground was occupied by Mansfield Mechanics until they were evicted for failing to pay rent. Mansfield Town subsequently moved in.
In 2008, Keith Haslam’s controversial decision to retain ownership of the stadium upon selling the club led to a rent dispute in 2010, resulting in Mansfield Town seeking alternative venues for home matches. Eventually, on March 1, 2012, the club regained possession of the stadium, severing all ties with Haslam.
Future Developments
Notably, there are plans to develop the condemned Bishop Street Stand, although no specific timeline has been announced.
