Stade Pierre-Mauroy: A Modern Multi-Purpose Stadium

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy, originally named the Grand Stade Lille Métropole, is a state-of-the-art stadium that has been the home of LOSC Lille Métropole since 2012. Named after the former Mayor of Lille, the stadium boasts a modern design and incredible flexibility. It can be easily transformed into five different configurations to host not only football matches, but also basketball games, rugby matches, and music concerts.

LOSC Lille has a rich history, born out of a merger between Olympique Lillois and SC Fives, both founding members of the French Ligue 1. Lillois, in fact, were the very first champions of the French top-flight, showing the club’s strong connection to success. With four French First Division titles and six Coupe de France wins, Lille has established itself as one of the most successful clubs in the country.

Stade Pierre-Mauroy Seating Plan and Where to Sit

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy follows the popular bowl-style design seen in modern stadiums. It has three levels, with a row of executive boxes separating the second and third. The second tier, which houses premier seating, is smaller than the other two levels. One unique feature of the stadium is its ability to lift part of a stand using hydraulic lifts and tracks, allowing for a second lower level of seating. This flexibility is especially useful for sports like basketball, tennis, and music shows that require a more intimate setup.

The stadium comprises four stands named after their geographical locations within the ground: Nord, Sud, Est, and Ouest. The North stand is where the most passionate Lille fans sit, creating an intense and intimidating atmosphere.

About Lille OSC Métropole

LOSC stands for Lille Olympique Sporting Club, stemming from the club’s merger between Red Star FC and Olympique Lillois. With three Ligue 1 titles and six Coupe de France wins, Lille is recognized as the fourth most successful club in France.

Lille’s main rivalry is with RC Lens, known as “Le Derby du Nord.” Valenciennes also shares a rivalry with Lille, though to a lesser extent. The cultural backgrounds of Lille and Lens contribute to the intensity of their rivalry, with Lens associated with working-class values and Lille representing a more middle-class and modern image.

Stade Pierre-Mauroy History

In 2012, Lille relocated to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, departing from the Stade Nord in order to increase capacity. The Stade Nord, built in 1976, had a limited capacity of 18,154 and lacked the necessary infrastructure to host Champions League matches. As a result, Lille played their European fixtures at the Stade Félix-Bollaert, the home stadium of their rivals, RC Lens.

The construction of the Stade Pierre-Mauroy was a joint effort, with the city of Lille, Lille themselves, and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional council sharing the costs. The new stadium provided a significant upgrade, offering a larger capacity and improved facilities for both fans and players.

Future Developments

As a relatively new stadium, the Stade Pierre-Mauroy is not currently scheduled for any major developments. While some enhancements were made to the surrounding area before the 2016 European Championships, no significant changes are anticipated in the near future.
